traditional Cypriot song

the snake and the hedgehog

curated by Avra Skoutella Pieridou and Michalis Hadjimichael

Published 2008

One in a series of eight books curated by Avra Skoutella Pieridou and Michalis Hadjimichael.

The melodies and lyrics of most of the songs derive from the folkloric research of the Cypriot folk musician Michalis Hadjimichael in the area of Kokkinochória in the east coast of the island. Dr Avra Pieridou Skoutella took the responsibility of designing the publication, devising the teaching methodologies, forming the children’s choir and teaching the songs and undertaking the creation and completed production of the publication.

red-black raisins

the snake craved

into the vineyard he came

entering and exiting like a thief

and the hedgehog saw him

under the vines tendrils

into the vines chase him

with spines spike him

Your aunt sent me here

to collect the raisins.

The sesame has ran out

raisin pies to bake

Not only a thief

but also a liar

as my aunt has enough sesame

to make one hundred pittes

and the hedgehog chase him

with spines spike him

and from then they argued

never again friends.
